Summary

Even after receiving salvation, believers often experience the tension between who they have become in Christ and what they still remember about their past. Salvation changes a believer's nature, but it does not erase memory or instantly eliminate old appetites. True spiritual growth comes from managing these memories with grace, embracing progressive sanctification, and resting in God's rich mercy as He invites us to try again.

Memory Management

Pastor's Points

1.We have a new nature, but an old memory.
2.We have a new affection, but an old appetite.
3.We have a new direction, but an old default.

Key Points

1.Salvation instantly changes your core nature, but it does not automatically erase your memory.
2.Believers must practice memory management—knowing what spiritual truths to hold onto and what past guilt to release.
3.The proof of being a new creation in Christ is not the absence of the old struggle, but the presence of a new fight.
4.Spiritual death means having the spiritual apparatus for relationship with God without it functioning as intended.
5.Sinning ('hamartia') means missing the target of God's glory, whether by ten feet or one inch, requiring equal grace.
6.The enemy seeks to energize fleshly behavior from within and use past receipts to pull down your present identity.
7.Grace gives you what you do not deserve, while mercy holds back the negative judgment you actually deserve.
8.The ultimate sign of Christian distinction in the world is authentic love for one another, not self-righteous moral superiority.

Focus daily on closing the gap between your current character and Christ rather than comparing yourself to others.
When you fall short, receive God's grace, accept His mercy, and choose to try again rather than wallowing in shame.
Intentionally practice Christlike love toward fellow believers as the primary badge of discipleship.
Refrain from self-righteous judgment, remembering that every believer relies entirely on unmerited grace.

Remember This

Just because you are tempted by old patterns does not mean you are the same person; grace gives you the power to stand up and try again.

A Challenge for You

When the enemy tries to name you by your misses, remember who your Maker is, pick up your arrow through grace, and let Him help you aim again.
