Sermon notes
It Runs in the Family
Sunday, August 23, 2026
Summary
In this sermon, Pastor Dharius Daniels discusses the vital role of spiritual family in our personal and relational formation. True relational success does not come from merely finding the right person, but from becoming the right person through spiritual growth and maturity. God places the lonely in spiritual families to provide a safe, specific, settled, and serving community where we can be formed into who He called us to be.Key Scriptures
Themes
Pastor's Points
- 1.Family is supposed to be safe
- 2.Family has to be specific
- 3.Family has to be settled
- 4.Family has serving
Key Points
- 1.Relational growth is deeply tied to personal growth; we cannot have healthy relationships without undergoing personal and spiritual formation.
- 2.You cannot outgrow imperfection, but through Christ, you can outgrow immaturity in your relationships.
- 3.Fervor and prayer alone are not enough to fix broken relationships; we need deep spiritual formation to heal relational deficits.
- 4.God intentionally uses spiritual family—including spiritual parents, siblings, and correctors—to shape and form us for our destiny.
- 5.A biblically functional spiritual family must be safe, free from the ranking of sins and gossip that make people feel guarded and hidden.
- 6.Spiritual family must be specific, establishing a clear spiritual culture and DNA of how we love, serve, and live together.
- 7.Believers must be settled and planted in a local church family because those who are planted in the house of the Lord are the ones who flourish.
- 8.Every member of a spiritual family is called to serve, carrying the shared responsibility of ministry using their unique spiritual gifts.

This Week
- Reflect on the question: Are you becoming the kind of person that the person you are looking for (or currently with) is looking for?
- Commit to a lifestyle of personal spiritual growth instead of just praying for others in your relationships to change.
- Actively participate in making your local church family a safe environment by refusing to engage in gossip or ranking sins.
- Identify and honor the spiritual fathers, mothers, siblings, and correctors God has placed in your life for your formation.
- Get planted in your local church community, moving past a consumer mindset of viewing church as just an event or restaurant.
- Discover your unique spiritual gifts and find a consistent way to serve within your church family this week.
- Pray for your spiritual family, asking God to strengthen your community and help you contribute to its specific spiritual DNA.
Remember This
