Summary

Every human heart is restlessly searching for God, though many mistakenly look for fulfillment in relationships, success, or modern spiritual counterfeits. Looking at Acts 8, Pastor Bryan Carter explains how God uses difficult seasons to branch us out into His purpose, calls us to beware of spiritual counterfeits by knowing God's Word, and invites us to surrender fully to Jesus. Because Christ paid for our sins in full on the cross, salvation and God's blessings cannot be bought—they are freely given to all who believe.

Beware of Counterfeits

3.

Believe

4.

Jesus Is Not For Sale

Key Points

1.
Branch Out: God often uses difficult seasons and pain to push believers out of their comfort zones and into His divine purpose.
2.
Beware of Counterfeits: Just because a teacher, movement, or sign draws a crowd does not mean it is authentic or from God.
3.
Believe: True faith requires recognizing that we are sinners in need of a Savior and surrendering our lives to Jesus Christ.
4.
Jesus Is Not For Sale: God's gifts, anointing, and salvation cannot be purchased or commercialized through money or human effort.
5.
Every human heart is restlessly searching for God, though many mistakenly seek fulfillment through relationships, success, or status.
6.
Every believer is qualified to share the Gospel, regardless of whether they hold a formal ministry title or theological degree.
7.
Modern spiritual trends—such as the Law of Attraction, syncretism, and relative truth—are spiritual counterfeits that do not align with Scripture.

Sermon Moments

“"Augustine put it this way: 'You have made us for yourself, oh Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.'"”

“"Why am I restless? Because you're searching for God... Until we connect with Him, we will search for God in the strangest places."”

“"Sometimes pain is what pushes us into an entirely new place in our walk and relationship with God."”

“"When it comes to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, we all need the Gospel. The rich need the Gospel and the poor need the Gospel... everybody needs the Gospel."”

“"You don't need a big Bible and a title behind your name... every single one in this room, when you come to faith and know Jesus, now you are qualified to tell everybody you can find about a man that has changed your life."”

“"The way they teach people to recognize counterfeit money is not by giving them lots of counterfeit money... they teach them how to recognize the authentic and real thing first."”

“"You can't buy salvation, you can't buy the Holy Spirit... because everything that we have from God is free—I take that back, it's not free, it's been paid for!"”

This Week

Identify areas in your life where you have been searching for fulfillment outside of God (such as career, relationships, or status) and surrender them to Him.

Reframe a current painful or uncomfortable season by asking God how He might be using it to push you into His purpose.

Share your personal story or a simple Gospel scripture (like John 3:16) with someone in your circle of influence this week.

Practice spiritual discernment by testing modern cultural trends and spiritual ideas against the clear truth of God's Word.

Spend consistent daily time reading the Bible so you become so familiar with authentic truth that spiritual counterfeits are immediately obvious.

Examine your heart to ensure you are not treating your relationship with God as a business transaction or trying to buy His favor through work or giving.

Rest in the peace that Jesus has paid for your past, present, and future sins completely on the cross.

Remember This

What every human heart is searching for can only be found through a relationship with Jesus Christ, whose salvation is freely given because He paid for it in full on the cross.

A Challenge for You

Family, you don't have to do counterfeits. Jesus is the real thing. He's already done all the work—He just waits on you to say yes to Him and to surrender your life to Him.
