Get Up: Faith Under Fire

Part of Awesome August: Bases LoadedSummary
In this powerful sermon, Pastor Jerry Flowers challenges believers to move from a state of spiritual stagnation and complacency into active, muscular faith. Drawing from the story of Jairus' daughter in Mark 5, he illustrates how God often uses delays and disappointments not to defeat us, but to introduce us to a deeper dimension of His character. Believers are called to reject the negative labels of others, overcome the trap of overthinking, and obey the divine command to 'get up' and walk in obedience.Key Scriptures
Themes
Pastor's Points
- 1.Introduction (God wants to introduce Himself in a new dimension)
- 2.Instruction (God gives instructions on what to do)
- 3.Obedience (Obeying what God has commanded)
Key Points
- 1.Complacency can lead to spiritual bedsores and pressure ulcers when we refuse to obey and move where God calls us.
- 2.We must be careful not to allow other people's labels and doubts to define our situations, or we might sign a death certificate on what God plans to raise up.
- 3.Revelation is not designed to be given on our deathbeds; it is meant to be implemented while we still have life to live.
- 4.God often uses delays and disappointments to introduce a deeper dimension of who He is, moving from a Healer to the Resurrection itself.
- 5.Our faith must be muscular enough to handle moments of pain, suffering, and delay, rather than only existing in comfort.
- 6.Overthinking is a misuse of our creative self, imagining worst-case scenarios that may never happen.
- 7.God's timeline may feel like a delay to us, but nothing is delayed to Him; He works through a process of request, delay, development, eviction of doubters, and fulfillment.
Sermon Moments
“The psalmist says, let everything that has breath praise the Lord. And everybody that fit that description, so can we give God some praise in the house?”
“You can slay a whole outfit, but you can't slay your bad attitude.”
“Some of us have been in the same place for so long that you're starting to formulate spiritual bedsores.”
“All worry is, is a down payment on a problem you may never have.”
“Overthinking is a misuse of your creative self. Look how creative you are, making horror stories in your mind that may never happen.”
“Be careful of allowing other people to put labels on your situation. Because if you adopt other people's labels, you could end up signing a death certificate on the very thing that God plans to raise up.”
“It's one thing to have faith, family. It's another thing to have faith when the thing is dead.”
“We want request, fulfilled. Jairus made a request, there was an appearing delay, develop, evict, then fulfill.”
This Week
- Identify areas of spiritual complacency or stagnation in your life and actively take steps to obey God's recent instructions.
- Commit to 'getting up' from past disappointments, resentment, or worry this week.
- Catch yourself when you begin overthinking, replacing anxious mental scenarios with truths from Scripture.
- Refuse to accept negative labels or hopeless assessments that others place on your life or circumstances.
- Spend time meditating on God as the 'I AM' who meets your specific needs (Protector, Defender, Provider) rather than trying to control the outcome.
- Practice 'evicting' negative, mocking, or doubtful influences from your inner circle when seeking God for a breakthrough.
- Evaluate your obedience to God's Word, ensuring you aren't expecting His fulfillment while avoiding His process of development.
Remember This
God uses life's delays and disappointments not to abandon us, but to develop our faith and introduce Himself to us in a completely new and powerful dimension.
A Challenge for You
Help us to surrender the 'how,' the 'why,' and the 'why didn't you' to You, Lord. Since You are the author and finisher of our faith, help us to render the pen to You, free us from control issues, and help us to trust You in the development phase.Keep growing this week
