Zephaniah
Warnings of judgment and a promise of salvation
Zephaniah, the son of Cushi and great-grandson of Hezekiah, wrote this book to the people of Israel and Jerusalem. He prophesied during the reign of King Josiah of Judah, about 641 to 610 BC, and was a contemporary of Jeremiah. At that time, God's judgment was announced against Israel and the surrounding heathen nations because of their transgressions. Facing the hopeless misery of Jerusalem, Zephaniah urged the people to seek God while there was still time, balancing these severe warnings of judgment with a promise of salvation.
