Ruth
A story of family, loyalty, and David's lineage
The Book of Ruth does not name its author, but it is traditionally credited to Samuel according to Jewish tradition. Its events take place during a period about 126 years before the birth of David. Originally part of the Book of Judges, it tells of Naomi moving to Moab with her husband, Elimelech, and later returning to Bethlehem with her daughter-in-law, Ruth. It describes the marriage of Boaz and Ruth and the birth of Obed, through whom David came. This simple story reflects faith, patience, industry, kindness, and God's care for those who trust him.
