Romans
A systematic explanation of the gospel to Rome
The apostle Paul wrote this letter to the church in Rome, which was composed of both Jews and Gentiles. He wrote it early in AD 58, probably from Corinth, just before traveling to Jerusalem. At that time, Rome was a famous city of great wealth and luxury, home to about 1,200,000 people—half of whom were slaves. The Roman church was likely planted by believers who had been in Jerusalem on Pentecost. Paul wrote to clearly explain the doctrines of salvation, offering a systematic presentation of the gospel as a plea for Gentiles addressed to Jews.
