Nahum
A prophecy announcing Nineveh's utter ruin
The prophet Nahum wrote this book, probably in Jerusalem soon after about 709 BC during the reign of Hezekiah. He had witnessed Sennacherib's invasion and the destruction of his host. At this time, the Assyrian empire was flourishing, and Assur-bani-pal was at the height of his glory. Its capital, Nineveh, was a vast, fortified center of world civilization and commerce. Yet it was a "bloody city" that plundered neighboring nations. Nahum declared the approaching complete destruction of Nineveh as punishment for the great wickedness of its people.
