Lamentations
Poems of sorrow and hope over fallen Jerusalem
The Book of Lamentations does not name its author, but it is traditionally credited to the prophet Jeremiah. Tradition places its origin in a cavern outside Jerusalem's Damascus gate after Nebuchadnezzar and the Chaldeans destroyed the holy city. The book was written for the people of God during a season of severe grief. Jerusalem lay in ruins, sitting like a solitary widow weeping over her desolation. These poems mourn the fall of the land, acknowledge the national sins that caused it, and look toward a better day through repentance and recovery.
