A history of Israel's cycles of failure and deliverance
The Book of Judges does not name its author, but it is traditionally credited to Samuel. It was probably written during Saul's reign or at the very beginning of David's reign, after the Philistines took the ark. The book connects with Joshua's narrative and records Israel's history following his death. During this era, the nation repeatedly fell into servitude under foreign oppressors, including Moab, Canaan, Midian, Ammon, and the Philistines. Thirteen judges delivered and governed Israel, capturing a turbulent time marked by widespread foreign oppression and severe religious and moral degeneracy.
