Jonah
A prophet flees God's call and learns of God's mercy
The Book of Jonah does not name its author, but it is traditionally credited to the prophet Jonah. The account opens with Jonah receiving a divine commission to go to Nineveh. After disobeying and suffering punishment, Jonah prayed and experienced a miraculous deliverance. He then obeyed a second commission and delivered God's message to Nineveh. The Ninevites repented, and God showed them long-sparing mercy, sparing the city for more than a century. Jonah became displeased by God's merciful decision, receiving a divine rebuke for his impatience.
