Jeremiah
Warnings of judgment and hope for a rebellious nation
Jeremiah, a priest’s son from Anathoth, wrote this book to the people of Judah. God called him as a prophet about 628 BC. He preached in Jerusalem and later in Egypt. King Josiah carried out reforms with Jeremiah’s help, but later rulers and the people bitterly persecuted him. King Jehoiakim even burned Jeremiah's scroll, prompting his servant Baruch to write another. Nebuchadnezzar besieged and burned Jerusalem in about 588 BC. Though imprisoned by angry princes, Jeremiah continually urged his rebellious nation to turn back to the LORD.
