James
Practical guidance for believers facing trials
James the Less, the Lord's brother and one of the twelve apostles, wrote this letter to Jewish believers scattered abroad. He wrote from Jerusalem, where he lived, probably about AD 62. At that time, religious fanaticism was tearing Jerusalem apart, while society struggled with vices like empty formalism, evil speaking, oppression, and favoring the rich. Believers faced trials and persecution. James wrote to encourage practical Christian living, urging his readers to practice active love, keep pure, and show patience through every trial.
